Step 1: Press and hold the "CODE SEARCH" button ("CODE.SRCH" for RCU500).

Step 2: Press and release the device ("TV", "DVD", "Cable", etc.) button. If programming for AUX, press and release the "AUX" button first, then press the device type to be programmed.

Code search

If you cannot locate the code for your device, try the code search method below:

Step 1: Turn on the device.

Step 2: Press and hold the "CODE SEARCH" button.

Step 3: Press and release the device ("TV", "DVD", "Cable", etc.) button. If programming for AUX, press and release the "AUX" button first, then press the device type to be programmed.

Step 4: Release the "CODE SEARCH" button.

Step 5: Press "ON/OFF" (or "POWER" for RCU500) repeatedly until the device turns off. Note that because there are so many codes, you may have to press the "ON/OFF" button up to a hundred times (at a rate of once per second).

Step 6: When your device shuts off, press and release the "ENTER" button.

Step 7: With your device on, press another button like "PROGRAM UP/DOWN" or "VOLUM UP/DOWN" to test. If it does not function correctly repeat steps 1 through 6.

Combo units

Some TV/VCR combo units may be controlled using a combination of TV and VCR codes. For example, Philips TV/VCR combo units can be controlled by both the Philips TV code and the Philips VCR code. In this case use the TV or VCR codes listed for your brand to operate your combo device.

How to reset your remote

If your remote stops responding or locks up, you should reset your remote: remove the batteries and press the number "1" on the keypad for 60 seconds, then reinstall the batteries and reprogram the remote for each of your devices.

Notes

A few RCA, GE & Proscan devices (TVs and VCRs) do not need to be programmed. With these brands, the device button (TV, VCR) will usually turn the units on and the On/Off button will only turn them off.

Scientific Atlanta cable boxes can be programmed with the code search method by using the "Channel Up" button, rather than "On/Off" during search. The device must be turned on before beginning code search. Once the device turns off, press and release "ENTER". In most cases this cable box can be turned on and off using the "CHANNEL UP" button, not the "On/Off" button.

Jerrold or General Instruments cable boxes can be programmed using the code search method. In some cases, these devices will change channels during the code search but do continue until the unit turns off, then press and release "ENTER". Some Zenith and Oak cable boxes require pressing "CHANNEL DOWN" rather than "ENTER" after code entry.
