Sony universal remote controls are usually preset at the factory to operate popular Sony brand A/V devices. To use the remote with other devices, you need to program it. Below you'll find the setup procedures for most recently manufactured Sony remote controls. If none of the instructions work, consult your remote's user manual.
The following instructions should work for Sony RM-VLZ620, RM-VLZ620T, RM-VZ220, RM-VZ220T, RM-VZ320, etc. universal remote controls using 5 digit codes.
Step 1: Press and hold "SET" for more than 3 seconds. The LED indicator lights up. While keeping "SET" held down, press the desired Device Select button ("TV","DVD", etc.), then release both buttons. The selected device select button lights up.
Step 2: Enter the manufacturer's code. The LED indicator flashes 3 times and the indicators will turn off.
Step 3: Test a few commonly used buttons to see if it works. If not, try the next code from your brand's list.
Step 1: Press and hold "SET" for more than 3 seconds. The LED indicator lights up. While keeping "SET" held down, press the desired Device Select button ("TV","DVD", etc.), then release both buttons. The selected device select button lights up.
Step 2: Enter '992'. The SET indicator flashes 3 times to indicate that the setting mode has been entered.
Step 3: Press and hold "▶" (play button) to start searching. When the device turns off, release the button. If you overshoot the required code, you can search for the next or previous code using the "⏩" (fast-forward) or "⏪" (rewind) button.
Step 4: Press "+" (OK button) to exit search mode. The LED indicator flashes 3 times and the indicators will turn off.
Notes:
If your remote supports leaning (e.g., the RM-VLZ620), you can teach it new functions from the original remote control supplied with your device. You can teach a function to all the buttons (except "SET") for any device mode.
Step 1: Place your universal remote control head to head with your device's original remote control, about 3-8cm (1–3in.) away.
Step 2: Press and hold "SET" for more than 3 seconds. While keeping "SET" held down, press "+" (OK button), then release both buttons. The selected device select button lights up.
Step 3: Enter '988'. The LED indicator flashes 3 times to indicate that the setting mode has been entered.
Step 4: Press the Device Select button ("TV","DVD", etc.) for the device you want to control. The selected Device Select button lights up.
Step 5: Press the button on the universal remote you want to teach. The LED indicator flashes with the button press. (Note: perform the next step within 30 seconds.)
Step 6: Press the button you want to learn on the original remote control. During signal transfer, only the LED indicator stays lit, and the Device Select button turns off. After signal transfer is complete, the LED indicator flashes 3 times. If the LED indicator flashes only once, it means that learning was unsuccessful.
Step 7: Repeat steps 4 to 6 to teach other new functions.
Step 8: Press "SET" to finish teaching. The LED indicator turns off.

The following instructions should work for Sony RM-EZ4, RM-EZ4T, RM-V18A, RM-V210, RM-V210T, RM-V302, RM-V310A, RM-V402, RM-VL600, RM-VL600T, RM-VL610, RM-VL610T, RM-VL710, RM-VZ800T, etc. universal remote controls using 2, 3 and 4 digit codes.
Step 1: Press and hold "SET", then press "MENU". The LED indicator lights up. Release both buttons.

Step 2: Press the desired Device Select button ("TV","DVD", etc.). The selected device button lights up.
Step 3: Enter the code number.
Step 4: Press "ENTER" (or "ENT") to finish setting. The LED indicator and the selected device button lights will turn off.
Step 5: Test a few commonly used buttons to see if it works. If not, try the next code from your brand's list.
Step 1: Press and hold "SET", then press "MENU". The LED indicator lights up. Release both buttons.

Step 2: Press the desired Device Select button ("TV","DVD", etc.). The selected device button lights up.
Step 3: Press "CH+" (or "CH-") and "Power" in turn until your device reacts: a TV will turn off, a VCR, CBL, DVD, AMP will power on, a CD player or MD player will start playing.
Step 4: When your device reacts, press "ENTER" (or "ENT") to exit code search and lock in the code. The LED indicator and the selected device button lights will turn off.
Step 5: Test a few commonly used buttons. If there are buttons that don't work, restart the procedure to find another, more compatible code.
Note: the learning function is supported only by a few select models (e.g., RM-VL600, RM-VL600T, RM-VL610, RM-VL610T, etc.).
Step 1: Place the universal remote head to head with your component's original remote control around 5-10cm or 2-4 inches away.
Step 2: Press and hold "SET" for over 3 seconds. The LED indicator will flash.
Step 3: Press the desired Device Select button ("TV","DVD", etc.). The selected device button will light up.
Step 4: Press the button on your universal remote you want to teach into. The LED indicator will flash.
Step 5: Press and hold the button you want to copy on the donor remote until the Device Select button lights up again.
Step 6: Repeat steps 4 and 5 to teach other functions.
Step 7: When you're done, press "SET" to exit learning mode.
To be able to program a Sony RM-KZ1 or RM-KZ1T Children's Remote Control, you need to remove the setup button cover first: loosen the screw with a screwdriver, slide the setup button cover, then lift it off.
Step 1: While holding down "SET", press numeric button "1". The LED indicator will light up. Release both buttons.
Step 2: Press the numeric buttons to enter the code for your TV or Set Top Box. The LED indicator will flash 3 times and will turn off.
Step 3: See if it works. If not, try the next code from your brand's list.
Step 1: While holding down "SET", press numeric button "2". The LED indicator will light up. Release both buttons.
Step 2: For TV, press numeric button "0". For SAT/Cable/IPTV, press numeric button "1".
Step 3: Press "ENT". The LED indicator will flash 3 times.
Step 4: Press and hold "ENT" to start searching. When the device turns off, release the button. (If you overshoot the working code, you can search for the next or previous one by pressing "1" or "2". To continue searching, press and hold "ENT".)
Step 5: Press "SET" to exit code search and memorize the code. The LED indicator will flash 3 times and turns off.
Step 6: See if it works. If you still cannot fully operate the device, repeat the procedure to search for another code.
You can assign a TV or Set Top Box channel to a favorite button ("1"-"7"), allowing your child to select it directly with a single press of a button.
Step 1: While holding down "SET", press numeric button "3". The LED indicator will light up. Release both buttons. The LED indicator will flash 3 times.
Step 2: Press the button you want the channel to be assigned to (e.g., "1", "2", ..., "7").
Step 3: Press the numeric buttons to enter the desired channel number.
Step 4: Press "ENT". The LED indicator will flash 3 times. To assign to other favorite buttons, repeat steps 2 to 4.
Step 5: Press "SET" to complete. The LED indicator will turn off.
