Programming instructions for TiVo Remote Controls

TiVo S5 remote control

The standard setup procedure for TiVo remote controls is done with the help of on-screen menus, but you can also program them independently.

To manually program a TiVo S2-S6, Voice series, Bolt, Vox, etc. remote control, try 'Direct code entry' first, and if none of the codes listed for your brand work, or your brand is not listed, try to find a working code with 'Auto search'.

Direct code entry

First, turn on your TV or audio device. Refer to the code lists and note the first code listed for your brand.

Programming the "TV PWR" Key

Step 1: Simultaneously press the "TiVo" and "TV PWR" keys for 3 seconds. The feedback LED will turn on and stay on.

Step 2: Using the numeric keys, enter the first code for your brand. The activity LED will blink 3 times and turn off.

Step 3: Point the remote at your TV or audio device and press the "TV PWR" key to see if it responds. If the device does not turn off, repeat this procedure using the next code listed for your brand.

To make sure you programmed in the right code, test other functions: for a TV, point the remote at your TV and press the "INPUT", "VOL" and "MUTE" keys. If the TV Input or volume does not change, start again, selecting the next code listed for your brand. If the TV responds to key presses as expected, setup is complete.

Programming the "INPUT" Key

Step 1: Simultaneously press the "TiVo" and "INPUT" keys for 3 seconds until the feedback LED stays lit.

Step 2: Using the numeric keys, enter the first code for your brand. The activity LED will blink 3 times and turn off.

Step 3: Point the remote at the device and press the "INPUT" key. If the TV does not display the name of a signal source, repeat this procedure, selecting the next code listed for your brand.

Programming the "VOL" and "MUTE" Keys

Step 1: Simultaneously press the "TiVo" and "MUTE" keys for 3 seconds. The feedback LED will turn on and stay on.

Step 2: Using the numeric keys, enter the first code for your brand. The activity LED will blink 3 times and turn off.

Step 3: Point the remote at the device and test the "VOL" and "MUTE" keys. If the volume does not increase, decrease and mute, repeat this procedure, selecting the next code listed for your brand. If the volume controls all functions as expected, setup is complete.

Code search

If none of the codes listed for your brand work, or your brand is not listed, try to find a working code with 'Code search'.

Search for a code to control your TV's power and volume

Step 1: Hold down the "TiVo" and "TV Power" buttons simultaneously until the red (or amber) LED on the remote control remains on.

Step 2: Enter code '0999'.

Step 3: After you enter the code, the LED will flash 3 times and then remain on.

Step 4: Press "Channel Up" once every 2 seconds. This will test all preprogrammed codes, one by one.

Step 5: When your TV turns off, press "Enter" to select the code. Press the "TV Power" button. If your TV turns on, you have successfully programmed your remote.

Note: If you cycle through all the codes, the LED will go off, indicating that you have tried all the codes. If this happens, or if you selected a code but the TV does not respond to the test, try again to make sure you did not skip over your code by going too fast.

Search for a code to control your TV's input (source) function

Step 1: Hold down the "TiVo" and "Input" buttons simultaneously until the red (or amber) LED on the remote control remains on.

Step 2: Enter code '0999'.

Step 3: After you enter the code, the LED will flash 3 times and then remain on.

Step 4: Press "Channel Up" once every 2 seconds. This will test all preprogrammed codes, one by one. Do not go any faster than this or you may skip over a code that works.

Step 5: When your TV switches inputs, press "Enter" to select the code. Press the "Input" button to test the code. If your TV switches inputs again, you have successfully programmed your remote.

Search for a code to control the volume of your Audio device

Step 1: Hold down the "TiVo" and "Mute" buttons simultaneously until the red (or amber) LED on the remote control remains on.

Step 2: Enter code '1999'.

Step 3: After you enter the code, the LED will flash 3 times and then remain on.

Step 4: Press "Channel Up" once every 2 seconds. This will test all preprogrammed codes, one by one. Do not go any faster than this or you may skip over a code that works.

Step 5: When the volume of your Audio device becomes muted, press "Enter" to select the code. Press "Volume Up" and then "Volume Down" to test the code. If the volume changes, you have successfully programmed the remote.

Learning function

If you have a Premiere XL, TiVo HD XL, or Series3 HD DVR, you own a learning remote that can easily be "taught" to control your TV. The TiVo Slide Pro, Glo Premium, and Slide remotes are learning remotes, which means they can learn certain functions from other remote controls without requiring a device code.

To use the learning function

Step 1: Press and hold the "TiVo" and "Select" buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds. When the red (or amber) LED remains lit, the remote entered "learning mode."

Step 2: On the TiVo remote, press and release the button you want it to learn (e.g., "TV Power"). The LED will flash once to acknowledge the button press, and then remains lit.

Step 3: Point the remote controls directly at each other, no more than 1 inch apart.

Step 4: Press and hold the corresponding button on the donor remote (e.g., "Power") until the TiVo remote flashes in response. If learning is successful, the LED will flash 4 times. (If learning is not successful, the LED will flash 10 times very quickly. You will need to repeat steps 1-4 before moving forward.)

Step 5: Repeat steps 2-4 until you have trained all the desired functions. When you are finished, press the "TiVo" button to exit learning mode and return the remote to normal operation.

Notes: Learning remotes can control power for up to 3 different devices:

  • If you have a Slide Pro remote, to learn power for a second device, follow all of the instructions above, but for Step 2 press "0" before pressing "TV Power". To learn power for a third device, in Step 2 press "1" before pressing "TV Power".
  • For all other learning remotes, to learn power for a second device, follow all of the instructions above, but for Step 2 press "1" before pressing "TV Power". To learn power for a third device, in Step 2 press "2" before pressing "TV Power".
  • If you use the TiVo remote to control power for more than one device, it is possible that one or more devices could miss the 'Power' IR signal, and pressing "Power" again may turn off one device as the other turns on. If this happens, you may need to turn on power for one device individually, either with its own remote or by pressing the "Power" button on the device itself.

Global Reset

The following procedure will reset all of the key functions on the remote, clearing the remote address, TV and Audio codes, as well as any programmable buttons. To perform a global reset of your TiVo remote:

Step 1: Press the "TiVo" button and the "TV Power" button simultaneously until the LED comes on.

Step 2: Press "Thumbs Down" 3 times, followed by "Enter". The LED should go out. If the LED does not go out, repeat this step. If an incorrect button is pressed accidentally, press "Clear" to start over.

You can now reprogram your remote to operate your television and Audio equipment. If you have a Roamio remote control, a Slide Pro, or an older Slide remote, you will need to pair it again.
